Guide to wedding dress silhouettes

Wedding dresses come in lots of different shapes and some of the terminology can be a little bit confusing! This post breaks down the different silhouettes to explain the most popular bridal gown shapes.

Ball Gown

This is the ultimate ‘Princess’ shape that features a full skirt that usually starts at the waist, so this is perfect for really accentuating your waistline.

A-line

As the name would suggest, this silhouette follows the shape of an ‘A’ so it gradually tapers out into a subtle skirt with a little volume that is incredibly flattering on all figures.

Mermaid

Also known as the fishtail shape, this is the most fitted & curve-hugging wedding dress style that fits to your body & stops at the knee, with the skirt kicking out dramatically below the knee. Perfect for accentuating curves & showing off your figure with some drama.

Fit & Flare

A more gentle take on a mermaid gown, this fitted silhouette gently hugs the body and doesn’t dramatically flare out from the knee, instead flowing down into a soft flared skirt.

Sheath

An elegant style that tends to follow the shape of your body, sometimes known as a column shape.
